Full lecture: Annual Justice Lecture 2025 with Fawzia Koofi

March 7, 2025

On 28 January 2025, LFJL held its fifth Annual Justice Lecture, in partnership with the Centre for Human Rights Law at SOAS University of London. The lecture titled Justice, interrupted: Reclaiming women’s rights in the face of gender apartheid, was given by Fawzia Koofi, inspirational Afghan women’s rights activist, peace negotiator and former politician.

For this lecture, Fawzia Koofi takes us on a journey from her childhood in Afghanistan during the Cold War, through to present-day activism under Taliban rule. She charts the rise of radicalised groups, originally empowered by Western governments in the fight against the Soviet Union, and the corresponding escalation of women's oppression - today reaching levels never witnessed before. Finding hope amongst the despair, she speaks about connecting the struggles for justice, peace and the respect of women's rights around the world, and the importance of making a contribution to the struggle - no matter how small.

The lecture is followed by a Q&A session led by LFJL’s Elham Saudi and with members from the audience.
